About the company:

IMD stands for The India Meteorological Department. This is an agency of Ministry of Earth Sciences that comes under the Government of India. This is one of the primary agency that is responsible for meteorological observations, seismology and weather forecasting. The headquarters of IMD is located in Delhi and it operates many of its observation stations in Antarctica and all across India. The regional offices of IMD are located at Kolkata, Nagpur, Guwahati, Mumbai, Chennai and New Delhi. This comes under one of the six regional specialised meteorological centres of the world meteorological organisation. IMD takes the responsibility for naming, forecasting and spreading of warnings for foreseen cyclones in the Indian Ocean that includes the other areas like Malacca Straits, the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal, and the Persian Gulf.

This was established during the year 1875. Their mandate includes making meteorological observations and to deliver current and forecast meteorological information for finest operation of weather sensitive activities like shipping, aviation, irrigation, offshore oil explorations, etc.

They warn against severe climate phenomena that causes destruction of property and life such as norwesters, heavy rains, cyclones, snow, duststorms, heat waves, and cold, etc. They also promote and conduct research in meteorology field and related disciplines.
