Job Description

Responsibilities:

The candidate will be responsible for providing expert Linux support for the R&D IT specific infrastructures, providing R&D engineers with expert advice on usage and implementing functional best practices.
He/she is a specialist in Linux, in particular scripting languages such as bash and Perl and in Linux middleware such as Apache and PHP with strong knowledge of PostgreSQL and MySQL.
The candidate will script R&D applications to run on Linux compute clusters and will support hosting through Apache and PHP.
The candidate will be expected to provide functional user support and to assist in defining technical requirements for the Linux infrastructure.
The candidate will be part of an international team responsible for providing Linux functionality and will work directly with colleagues in Europa and North America.
Support window will be aimed at European office hours.

Furthermore, the candidate will be expected to

participate in (internal) customer meetings at operational level
assist in defining technical requirements for the Linux infrastructure
ensure operational excellence within his/her solutions scope
prevent and/or solve service interruptions for the solution environment
ensure compliance with rules and regulations (e.g. security) related to the solution environment
plan and document his/her activities including technical documentation and reports

Skills/ Qualifications:

Technical skills

Key knowledge

Proficient knowledge in scripting: Linux/Unix shell (bash, ksh, etc), Perl etc.
Apache, PHP middleware
Knowledge of X11 and X-Windows.
Familiarity with PostgreSQL and MySQL database management systems
Troubleshooting skills
Willingness to experiment with tools and services to stay up to date with latest technologies

Basic knowledge

Linux Operating Systems/distributions (L2/L3 system administration) in a networked environment (NIS, LDAP, NFS)
Knowledge of a workload management platform (job scheduler) for distributed computing such as LSF or Slurm would be seen as a plus
Container knowledge (Docker, Podman, etc) would be seen as a plus

Thinking environment

Coordinates his/her own activities in order to ensure that the solution performance is at agreed levels
Looks beyond his/her area of expertise
Can analyze and solve problems in his/her area of expertise
Feels responsible for the perfect performance of the infrastructure within his/her scope
Thinks and acts as service integrator between different technologies and service provider for business
Takes initiatives and can ‘think along’ with the (internal) customer
Has a clear overview of the IT environment and can explain it to others

Human Relation Skills

Moderate, can communicate and connect with technically oriented users

Education and experience

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent, preferably in Engineering or IT is required along with 2+ years of relevant working experience with AWS Cloud
