NBPGR stands for National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources. The headquarters of this bureau is located at New Delhi. This is located at an altitude of 226 meters above mean sea level. The necessity for the formation of an organization to embark on happenings of plant overview and germplasm growth for use in crop improvement was felt as early as 1935 by the ‘Crops and Soil Wing’ of the earlier 'Board of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry’. They draw the guidelines from the crop science division of ICAR, Research Advisory Committee, Institute Research Council and Germplasm Advisory Committees, Institute Management Committee. They have five divisions, ten regional stations situated at various phyto-geographical zones, 3 units and one experimental farm located at headquarters in Delhi. They have regional stations at Shimla of Himachal Pradesh, Thrissur of Kerala, Akola of Maharashtra, Jodhpur of Rajasthan, Shillong of Meghalaya, Srinagar of Jammu and Kashmir, Hyderabad of Telangana, Bhowali of Uttarakhand, Ranchi, and Cuttack.
The formation of the Bureau accorded with the advent of the green revolution and was in response to the understanding of supposed effects of that green revolution on agrobiodiversity. Also, this was done in harmony with the international developments in the mode of establishment of the International Board for plant genetic resources, in the year 1974. They have also played a major role in the development of different crop plants and development and diversification of agriculture in India through germplasm introduction from different organizations and institutions located in foreign countries and germplasm collection from all over the country and all over the world and conservation thereof.
