About

ARIES stands for Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences.  This institute has a legacy of more than seven decades. Earlier it was under state observatory but later it became an autonomous institute. This institute is situated at around 50 kms from Nainital towards the east. They have India’s largest telescope. This is one of the leading institutes that specializes in observational Astrophysics, Astronomy and Atmospheric Sciences. Their main research and development interests in the field of astrophysics and astronomy are in planetary, galactic, solar, stellar star clusters, other galaxies, x-ray binaries, quasars, etc. They mainly focus on the atmospheric sciences division mostly in the lower parts of the atmosphere and they cover the studies on trace gases and aerosols. They also extended their origin to numerical and theoretical studies in order to strengthen the scientific contribution. They have made a unique contribution for long.

To carry out several observations in the cutting edge areas of astronomy, they have installed 360 cms and 130 cms optical telescopes at a location called ‘Devasthal’ located 60 kilometres from their location. They have the advantages of excellent observing conditions and also have dark skies. Scientists from the ARIES solar group also participate in various national projects such as the National Large Solar Telescope and Space coronagraph. Different instruments are used for observing the optical properties and physical properties of trace gases and aerosols. They also focus on building their research and development strengths in engineering and sciences, to develop various teaching programmes and observing facilities. They give equal importance to student training.
