About the Company
National Institute For Research in Reproductive Health (NIRRH) was established in 1970 by merging two ICMR units namely Contraceptive Testing and Reproductive Physiology. The directive of the Institute is to address the nationwide and global reproductive health issues. The institute was established with the goal to develop efficacious modalities for fertility regulation through research. In addition to this, the goal is also to develop effective means for early detection of gynecological cancers (i.e cervical and ovarian cancers). Further, it is also responsible to develop knowledge databases of various reproductive disorders.
Also, the institute is affiliated with the University of Mumbai for the programmes of M.Sc. and Ph.D. in Applied Biology, Biochemistry, and Life Sciences. Major research areas of NIRRH include Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health (ARSH), Fertility Regulation, Geriatric health with special emphasis on bone health, Infertility and Reproductive Disorders, Maternal and Child Health, and Reproductive Tract Infections including HIV/AIDS.
While formulating the research proposals, special emphasis is given to the perspectives and health needs of women and various underserved population groups such as tribal communities, urban slums, and adolescents. The research programs also focus on increasing men’s participation in planned parenthood for better reproductive health.
NIRRH has been giving high priority to the below-mentioned strategic issues:
Address female infertility and associated disorders (i.e endometriosis)
Promote child health and development
Ensure safe pregnancies
Develop safer medical methods for pregnancy termination
Idiopathic male infertility & Premature Ovarian Failure (POF)
Detect, diagnose & treat RTIs (including HIV & STIs)
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome(PCOS)
Develop safer and more effective fertility regulating technologies
Reduce health concerns related to osteoporosis and menopause
The institute also initiated research on some new areas such as bioinformatics, functional genomics, structural biology, stem cell research, preclinical reproductive and genetic toxicology, and reproductive tract cancers. With the introduction of state-of-the-art technologies, the technical skills and infrastructure have been strengthened thus providing opportunities for the staff to keep updating their skill level.
