ONGC stands for Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and this is an Indian government possessed enterprise and international crude oil and gas company. Their registered office is located in New Delhi. The top official of ONGC is designated as CEO, Chairman, and Managing Director who is a civil servant in IAS cadre. ONGC is owned by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, of Government of India. This company is the biggest oil and gas exploration and production company in India, and they produce over 70% of India's crude oil (which is equivalent to almost 57% of the country's total demand) and more than 84% of its natural gas. In the year 2010, the Government of India gave the Maharatna status to ONGC.

In a survey conducted by Government of India for the financial year 2019 and 2020, it was ranked as the biggest profit making public sector undertaking in India. It is ranked 7th amongst the Top 250 Global Energy Companies by Platts.

This was founded during the year 1956 by Government of India. It is involved in discovering for and using hydrocarbons in twenty six sedimentary basins of India, and owns and runs more than 11,000 kilometers of pipelines in India. Its global subsidiary ONGC Videsh presently has projects in 17 countries. ONGC has discovered six of the seven commercially generating Indian Basins, in the previous 50 years, totalling over 7.15 billion tonnes of In-place Oil & Gas volume of hydrocarbons in country’s basins.

Against a global drop of production from matured grounds, ONGC has upheld production from their brownfields such as Mumbai High, with the help of bellicose investments in numerous EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) and IOR (Improved Oil Recovery) schemes. They have many matured fields with a present recovery factor of about 25–33%.
