About the institute

RMRC stands for The Regional Medical Research Centre, located at Bhubaneswar and this is a permanent research centre of Indian Council of Medical Research - ICMR. In the year 1981 the foundation stone for this centre was laid by then India’s prime minister Late Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

In the beginning RMRC started in a small rental accommodation in 1982 and shifted to the Centre’s own building in year 1990 after completion. Their campus is situated in an area of twenty acres of scenic landscape at Chandrasekharpur and has its own research laboratory and administrative building, auditorium, animal house, staff quarters, guest house and research scholars’ hostel.

Since the last three decades, the institute has continued to stay as an international and national focus for association in research where population, laboratory, clinical, and social sciences are combined to talk on the broad issues related to wellbeing.

This institute of Bhubaneswar branch is one among the 26 Institutes and Centers that comes under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under the Department of Health Research (DHR), guided and administered by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of Government of India. ICMR is the top body in our country for the coordination, formulation and promotion of biomedical research. RMRC is one of the ancient medical research bodies in the world.

RMRC Bhubaneswar performs basic and also applied research to comprehend and eventually develop inhibition strategy for several diseases of regional prominence such as lymphatic filariasis, diarrhoeal disorders, haemoglobinopathies, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, malaria, emerging and re-emerging bacterial/viral infections and related disorders, diabetes and health problems related to tribal populations.
